Souks and Markets in Casablanca: Where to Buy What

Casablanca doesn't have the huge souks of Marrakech or Fez, but it has its own markets, more authentic and less touristy. Here is where to go depending on what you're after.

The Habous quarter: crafts and sweets

Built in the 1930s, the Habous quarter (or New Medina) mixes arcades, small squares and shops. You'll find:

  • Babouche slippers, pottery, lanterns and rugs
  • Books and calligraphy
  • The olive and spice market
  • Renowned Moroccan pastry shops

The Central Market: fresh produce

Right downtown, the Central Market is the place for fish, seafood, flowers and spices. Several small restaurants grill the fish you choose.

The old medina: souvenirs and atmosphere

Near the port, the old medina is perfect for wandering and picking up inexpensive souvenirs. Haggle with a smile.

Derb Ghallef: Ali Baba's cave

The Derb Ghallef flea market sells everything: electronics, clothes, furniture, antiques. Worth a visit for the atmosphere; keep an eye on your belongings.

Shopping malls

  • Morocco Mall, on the Corniche: one of Africa's largest malls, with an aquarium
  • Anfa Place, facing the ocean
  • The Twin Center and Maarif boutiques for fashion

The art of haggling

  1. Ask the price, then offer about half.
  2. Stay friendly and take your time: haggling is a conversation.
  3. If the price doesn't suit you, say thank you and walk away: the seller often calls you back.

Store your finds

Our apartments have plenty of storage for your purchases, and Maarif is 10 minutes from the Habous quarter. See our apartments.
