An Art Deco Walk in Casablanca: Architecture Not to Miss

Between the 1920s and the 1950s, Casablanca was a testing ground for architects. The result is one of the world's richest Art Deco and modernist ensembles, blending Moroccan motifs and geometric lines.

The walking route (2 to 3 hours)

1. Mohammed V Square

Start at the courthouse, the wilaya and the post office, all neo-Moorish, around the large fountain.

2. Boulevard Mohammed V

The city's finest Art Deco street. Look up: wrought-iron balconies, friezes, bay windows and carved facades. Don't miss the former Hotel Lincoln, a downtown icon.

3. The Central Market

A covered market from the 1910s–1920s with a white facade, still in use.

4. Period cinemas

Several old theaters, such as the Rialto, recall the golden age of cinema in Casablanca.

5. The Gauthier district

Residential buildings from the 1930s to the 1950s, often with remarkable entrance halls.

6. Sacré-Cœur Cathedral

A white 1930s building mixing Art Deco and Gothic inspiration, now a cultural venue.

7. Villa des Arts

An Art Deco villa turned into a contemporary art center.

Going further

The Casamémoire association protects this heritage and runs guided tours and heritage days. It is the best way to step inside buildings that are usually closed.

Photo tips

  • Morning light is ideal for facades.
  • Respect privacy: many of these buildings are lived in.
