Money in Morocco: Dirhams, Exchange and Card Payments
The Moroccan dirham (MAD) is a currency whose export is restricted: you often can't buy it before you travel. Here is how to manage your money on the spot.
Exchanging money
- At the airport: exchange offices are open in arrivals. Handy for your first expenses.
- In town: exchange offices and banks often offer better rates.
- Keep your exchange receipts: they are requested to convert your dirhams back when you leave.
Using ATMs
ATMs are everywhere in Casablanca. It is often the simplest option.
- Check your bank's fees for foreign withdrawals.
- Decline the ATM's conversion offer and choose to be charged in dirhams: the rate is usually better.
Paying by card
Cards are accepted in supermarkets, malls, hotels and many restaurants. Cash is still essential for:
- Petit taxis
- Markets and souks
- Small cafés and street eateries
- Tips
Tipping
Tips are appreciated: about 10% in restaurants, a few dirhams for a service.
How much cash to carry
Always keep the equivalent of 200 to 300 dirhams in small notes for taxis and small purchases.
